Winners announced for Create from a Crate 2016

Two students from the Australian National University (ANU), School of Art and a highly skilled, Benalla based, woodwork hobbyist, shared a prize pool of $6,000 by winning Create from a Crate – a national, environmentally focused, woodwork competition co-founded by Smart Recycling. The exhibition brings together Australia’s most talented woodworkers, designers and makers take up the challenge of making a beautiful object or furniture piece from two rough and discarded timber pallets.

Twenty year old student, Jeremy Brown, who impressed the judging panel, with a sleek, light framed chair that he created through hand-cut joinery, was overjoyed by winning first prize.

Taking second prize, was veteran Create from a Crate entrant David Hall, who has produced items for a number of previous exhibitions . He described the process for making his entry as a ‘sometimes frustrating, but ultimately rewarding exercise’ His Stack of Crates Cabinet is a finely crafted piece that connects with the original use of the timber and incorporates the timbers damages and flaws into considered design features.

Clare Solomon from ANU came third, with one of the exhibitions more unexpected entries, a satchel bag constructed using traditional fine woodworking techniques.

We recycle timber packaging, commercial and builders waste and sell recycled pallets, crates and landscaping products.
